Booking PTE Academic is done entirely online through the Pearson VUE portal, takes about 15 minutes when you have the right information ready, and can be done with as little as 48 hours' notice at centres in major cities.
There are a few decisions in the process — and a few mistakes — that are worth understanding before you start.
Before You Start: Which PTE Test Do You Need?
PTE Academic — for university admissions globally and visa/immigration applications in Australia, UK, and New Zealand. This is the version most Indian students and professionals are looking for.
PTE Academic UKVI — specifically required for UK visa applications (Student Visa, Skilled Worker Visa). If you need both a UK university admission and a UK visa, PTE Academic UKVI covers both. Standard PTE Academic does not satisfy UK visa requirements.
PTE Core — exclusively for Canadian immigration (IRCC). Accepted for Express Entry, PNPs, and work/study permits. PTE Core is not PTE Academic — taking PTE Academic for Canadian immigration is a common and expensive mistake.
During registration, Pearson's booking portal will ask for your purpose (Study, Work, or Migration) and destination country, and will recommend the correct version. Use this as a guide but confirm for yourself before paying.
What You Need Before Starting
- Valid passport — the only accepted ID for PTE Academic in India. Must be valid on your test date
- Name exactly as on passport — including middle name if it appears on your passport. Even small discrepancies can result in being turned away at the test centre
- Active email address — for your myPTE account
- Credit/debit card or UPI — for payment
Step-by-Step Registration
Step 1: Go to pearsonpte.com Click 'Book a Test' on the homepage.
Step 2: Create or log in to your myPTE account If you're new, click 'Create Account' and provide your full name, email address, date of birth, and nationality. If you already have an account from a previous test, log in.
Step 3: Choose your destination and purpose Select your target country and the purpose of your test (Study, Work, or Migration). The portal will recommend the appropriate PTE version. Verify that it matches your actual requirement.
Step 4: Find a test centre Search by city. PTE has centres in 50+ Indian cities. In major metros — Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai — slots are typically available 2–3 times per week. In smaller cities, availability may be more limited. Check at least 2–3 weeks in advance.
Step 5: Select your date and time Highlighted dates show available slots. Select your preferred date and time. In peak admission seasons (October–December and April–June), slots fill quickly in high-demand centres — book earlier than you think you need to.
Step 6: Review all details Before paying, check:
- Test type (PTE Academic, UKVI, or Core)
- Your name as entered — must exactly match your passport
- Test centre address and date
Step 7: Make payment Fee: ₹18,900 inclusive of 18% GST (as of March 2026). Payment methods: credit/debit card, UPI, or net banking.
Step 8: Save your confirmation You'll receive a confirmation email with your appointment details. Keep the booking reference — you'll need it on test day.
Rescheduling and Cancellation
This is where candidates are most often caught off-guard:
| Action | Timing | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Rescheduling | 14+ days before test | Free |
| Rescheduling | 7–13 days before test | ~50% of exam fee (~₹9,450) |
| Rescheduling | Within 7 days | Not permitted — must cancel and rebook |
| Cancellation | 14+ days before test | Full refund |
| Cancellation | 8–13 days before test | ~50% refund |
| Cancellation | 7 days or less | No refund |
The free rescheduling window closes at exactly 14 days before your test. If you're not confident your preparation will be ready by your booked date, reschedule before the 14-day mark — not after.
Test Day Requirements
- Original, valid passport — same one used for registration
- Booking confirmation
- Arrive at the centre 30 minutes before your scheduled time
- No personal items allowed in the test room — lockers are provided
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Taking PTE Academic instead of PTE Core for Canada: IRCC does not accept PTE Academic. If you're applying for Canadian immigration, you need PTE Core, booked separately through the same Pearson VUE portal.
Name mismatch: If your name on your myPTE account doesn't exactly match your passport, you may be turned away at the test centre. Check the spelling, middle name inclusion, and name order before completing registration.
Booking too close to a deadline: PTE results arrive in 1–2 business days, but test centre availability is not guaranteed. Don't assume you can book a test 3 days before you need a result.
Rescheduling within 7 days: If your circumstances change and you need to move the date less than a week out, you cannot reschedule — you must cancel (losing the fee) and rebook. The only workaround is to request a medical emergency rescheduling with documentation, which is assessed case by case.
