Before We Start

OET isn't just an English test. It's a healthcare English test.

The exam is built around real clinical scenarios — patient consultations, referral letters, ward rounds. Everything you need to know before you start preparing.

01

What is OET?

The Occupational English Test — developed by Cambridge Boxhill Language Assessment (CBLA) specifically for healthcare professionals. Recognised by regulators in the UK, Australia, Ireland, New Zealand, and beyond. Unlike generic English tests, every task in OET uses healthcare settings, vocabulary, and scenarios.

02

Who needs OET?

Nurses — NMC registration (UK), AHPRA (Australia), NMBI (Ireland). Doctors — GMC (UK), AMC (Australia), MCNZ (New Zealand). Allied Health — pharmacists, dentists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and more. Not sure if OET is right for you? We confirm it in your first session.

03

How OET is Scored

OET uses a grade scale of A (highest) to E (lowest), with an equivalent numerical score from 0 to 500. Each of the four skills — Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking — is graded separately. Most healthcare regulatory boards require Grade B (350/500) in all four skills.

04

What Grade Do You Need?

NMC (UK Nursing) — Grade B in all four skills GMC (UK Doctors) — Grade B in Reading, Writing & Speaking; Grade C+ in Listening AHPRA (Australia) — Grade B in all four skills NMBI (Ireland Nursing) — Grade B in all four skills

How We Train

OET is clinical English. We train you for the exact scenarios you'll face.

Most candidates lose marks in Writing or Speaking — the two skills that are hardest to self-prepare. We fix both, skill by skill.

Skill 01
Listening
Part A + Part B
42 questions
~40 minutes

OET Listening puts you inside real clinical settings. Part A is a patient consultation — you fill in notes as you listen to a healthcare professional taking a history. Part B is a series of short workplace extracts — ward rounds, team briefings, patient instructions — with multiple-choice questions. We train you on the specific note-taking shortcuts and question patterns that separate Grade B candidates from Grade C+ ones.

Skill 02
Reading
Parts A, B & C
42 questions
60 minutes

Part A is a speed task — four short healthcare texts, 15 minutes, rapid-fire gap fill. Most candidates underperform here because they try to read everything. We train the skimming discipline that makes Part A manageable. Parts B and C use longer clinical and academic texts. We work through every question type — match the heading, True/False/Not Given, multiple choice — until the logic behind each format becomes automatic.

Skill 03
Writing
1 referral letter
Profession-specific
45 minutes

Writing is where most OET candidates drop a grade. The task is always a profession-specific letter — a referral, a discharge summary, a transfer note — and the marking criteria rewards accurate information selection, appropriate tone, and clinical register. We train to your exact profession: nurses write nursing letters, doctors write medical referrals. Every letter you submit gets detailed written feedback mapped against the OET criteria, so you know exactly what to fix.

Skill 04
Speaking
2 role-plays
Patient interactions
~20 minutes

OET Speaking is two simulated clinical role-plays — you are the healthcare professional, your examiner plays the patient or carer. The scenarios are healthcare-specific: explaining a procedure, delivering bad news, managing a non-compliant patient. Candidates who fail freeze, become robotic, or lose the patient-centred register the assessors are looking for. We run live role-play sessions every week and give recorded feedback on language, empathy, and clinical communication until the exam feels like another shift.

Who This Is For

Whether it's your first attempt or your third — we meet you where you are.

Nurses & Midwives

Applying for NMC registration in the UK or AHPRA in Australia. We work to your exact board requirement — Grade B in all four skills — with nursing-specific Writing and Speaking tasks throughout.

Doctors

GMC registration (UK), AMC pathway (Australia), MCNZ (New Zealand). Grade requirements vary slightly by destination — we confirm yours and build the plan around it from day one.

Allied Health Professionals

Pharmacists, physiotherapists, dentists, occupational therapists — OET has a profession-specific sub-test for each. Your Writing and Speaking practice matches your exact healthcare role.

Retakers

You've sat OET before. You're one or two grades away. We diagnose the exact skill holding you back — usually Writing or Speaking — and fix it directly. No time wasted on what's already working.

How It Works

From the first message to your target grade.

1

Free Demo & Level Check

We meet, understand your registration goal, assess your current level, and show you exactly what your plan will look like. No sales pitch. No pressure. Just clarity on what Grade B will take for you specifically.

2

Your Custom OET Plan

Your profession. Your target grade. Your destination board's exact requirement. We build the plan around your weakest skills — Writing and Speaking first if that's where the gap is.

3

Train, Mock, Achieve

Regular mock tests, grade tracking, profession-specific practice, and live role-play sessions — until you're hitting Grade B consistently, not just on a good day.

FAQ

OET questions we hear every day.

What OET grade do I need?

Most healthcare regulatory boards require Grade B (350/500) in all four skills. The GMC (UK) allows Grade C+ in Listening while requiring Grade B in the other three. Your exact requirement depends on your profession and destination board — we confirm this in your first session so you know exactly what to target.

How is OET Writing different from other English tests?

OET Writing is profession-specific. You are given a case note and asked to write a referral, discharge summary, or transfer letter appropriate to your healthcare role — as a nurse, doctor, pharmacist, etc. The letter must select relevant clinical information, use appropriate medical register, and maintain a professional tone. It is the single hardest skill to self-study, which is why focused 1:1 feedback on each letter makes such a significant difference.

How long will OET preparation take?

Most students reach Grade B in 4 to 6 weeks of focused 1:1 training. If your timeline is tight, our Capsule Course covers the essentials in an intensive format. If you have more time, we use it to build confidence across all four skills, especially Writing and Speaking where sustained practice pays off most.

Are classes online or in-person?

Both. Our 1:1 sessions run fully online, in-person, or as a mix of both — whatever works for you. We train healthcare professionals across India. All mock tests, role-play sessions, and Writing feedback work identically online.

What if I don't reach my target grade?

We don't walk away. We review what happened, identify the specific gap, and continue working with you. Your registration goal doesn't change — neither do we.

Is the first class really free?

Yes. No catch. The free demo class is how we understand your registration goal, assess your current level, and show you exactly how the plan will work. You decide whether to continue — with no pressure either way.

Your target grade. Let's go get it. Together.
