FAQ
Common questions about English tests
Which English test is accepted for a UK Skilled Worker visa?
The UK Home Office requires a Secure English Language Test (SELT). IELTS for UKVI is the most common choice — you typically need B1 English (roughly 4.0–5.5 per band on the IELTS scale) for most visa categories. PTE Academic UKVI is also accepted.
Is IELTS or PTE better for Australia PR?
Both are accepted for Australian skilled migration. PTE Academic often scores faster (automated marking, results in 5 business days) and allows re-scoring for individual sections. IELTS Academic is widely accepted and familiar to most assessors. The right choice depends on your stronger skill areas — book a free session with us and we'll help you decide.
Do nurses need OET or IELTS?
Both OET and IELTS Academic are accepted by major nursing regulators. NMC (UK), AHPRA (Australia), and NMBNZ (New Zealand) all accept either. OET is often preferred because it uses healthcare scenarios — patient handovers, discharge letters — making it more relevant and feel less like a "generic English test".
Can I use Duolingo for a student visa?
Yes — Duolingo English Test is accepted by thousands of universities in the US, Canada, UK, Ireland, and Australia. However, some universities (especially in the UK and Australia) still prefer IELTS or PTE. Always confirm with your specific university's admission requirements before booking.
What if I don't need a visa or exam — can Unpyn Academy still help?
Absolutely. Our Everyday English and Business English programmes are built for professionals who want to speak confidently at work, in meetings, or in daily life — no exam needed. We've helped cabin crew, hospitality managers, and working professionals across industries level up their English without the pressure of an exam.
How long does it take to prepare for IELTS / PTE / OET?
It depends on your current level and target score. Most students need 4–12 weeks of focused coaching. Those starting from Band 5 targeting Band 7+ often need 8–12 weeks. Our trainers personalise a plan after a free assessment — no cookie-cutter timelines.
