Before We Start

The Duolingo English Test is taken at home. No test centre. No long wait for results.

The DET is one of the most convenient and affordable English proficiency tests available today. Everything you need to know before you start preparing.

01

What is the Duolingo English Test?

The Duolingo English Test (DET) is an online, at-home English proficiency test developed by Duolingo. You take it on your computer with a webcam — no test centre booking, no travel. It is adaptive, meaning the questions adjust in difficulty based on your responses. Results are available within 48 hours and accepted by over 4,000 universities and institutions worldwide.

02

Who Needs the DET?

University applicants — thousands of universities in the US, Canada, UK, Australia, and Europe accept the DET for admissions. Those who prefer flexibility — no fixed test dates, no centre booking. You can take the DET any time, from anywhere. Those on a budget — at $65, the DET costs significantly less than IELTS or PTE while being accepted by most of the same institutions.

03

How the DET is Scored

The Duolingo English Test is scored on a scale of 10 to 160. You receive an overall score plus four subscores — Literacy, Comprehension, Conversation, and Production — each scored 10 to 160. Universities see your overall score, your subscores, a short video interview, and a written sample. All four components are reviewed as part of your application.

04

What DET Score Do You Need?

Most universities (US/Canada/UK) — 100 to 115 Competitive programmes & top universities — 115 to 130 Top research universities (MIT, Harvard, etc.) — 125 to 145 Community colleges & foundation programmes — 85 to 95

How We Train

The DET tests all four skills through tasks you've never seen on any other exam.

The Duolingo English Test has over 10 unique task types — many of them unlike anything in IELTS or PTE. Familiarity with each format is half the battle. We train every one.

Subscore 01
Literacy
Reading + Writing
Scored 10–160
Adaptive difficulty

The Literacy subscore reflects your ability to read and write in English. Key task types include Read and Complete — where you fill in missing letters in words mid-sentence, testing spelling and vocabulary simultaneously — and Read and Select, where you must identify real English words from a list that also contains plausible-looking non-words. These tasks look deceptively simple but trip up candidates who haven't practised them. We drill both formats until accuracy and speed are second nature, then layer in the Read, then Write task where a short reading passage becomes the input for a written response.

Subscore 02
Comprehension
Listening + Reading
Scored 10–160

The Comprehension subscore covers your ability to understand spoken and written English. The Listen and Type task — where you hear an audio clip and must transcribe it accurately — is one of the highest-stakes tasks in the entire test. Accuracy, spelling, and punctuation all matter. A single missed word can cost you. We run structured dictation drills and accent exposure sessions that make this task manageable under pressure. We also train the Listen, then Speak task, where comprehension of an audio clip feeds directly into a speaking response.

Subscore 03
Conversation
Speaking + Listening
Scored 10–160

The Conversation subscore measures how well you can communicate — listening, processing, and responding in real time. The Speak About the Topic task gives you a prompt and 30 to 90 seconds to respond aloud. Most candidates either over-prepare a scripted answer (which sounds unnatural and scores poorly) or under-prepare and run out of ideas mid-response. We train the structured response method that keeps your speaking natural, coherent, and full for the full duration. We also prepare you for the Video Interview — the unscored but university-visible two-minute response that admissions teams actually read.

Subscore 04
Production
Writing + Speaking
Scored 10–160
+ Writing Sample

The Production subscore reflects your ability to produce English — both in writing and speech. The Write About the Photo task asks you to describe an image in detail within 60 seconds: a high-speed writing task that rewards vocabulary range and sentence variety. The Read Aloud task scores your pronunciation, fluency, and oral accuracy as you read a short paragraph aloud. Both tasks are AI-graded and reward consistent, natural production over memorised phrases. We also prepare you for the Writing Sample — the optional but university-visible extended response that gives admissions teams a fuller picture of your writing ability.

Who This Is For

Whether it's your first attempt or your third — we meet you where you are.

University Applicants

Applying to universities in the US, Canada, UK, Australia, or Europe. The DET is accepted by 4,000+ institutions — including many of the same universities that accept IELTS and PTE. Faster, cheaper, and just as valid.

Those Who Prefer Testing at Home

No test centre anxiety, no fixed slots to book weeks in advance. The DET is taken at home on your own schedule — you need a computer, a webcam, and a quiet room. That flexibility matters for working professionals and students with tight schedules.

Cost-Conscious Applicants

At $65 per attempt, the Duolingo English Test costs a fraction of IELTS or PTE. If you need multiple attempts to reach your target score, the financial flexibility matters. And since you can retake quickly, momentum never stalls.

Retakers

You've sat the DET before and one or two subscores are holding back your overall. We diagnose exactly which task types are costing you marks — usually Listen and Type or Speak About the Topic — and fix those specifically.

How It Works

From the first message to your target DET score.

1

Free Demo & Score Check

We meet, understand your university goal, assess your current level across all four subscores, and map out your training plan. No sales pitch. No pressure. Just a clear picture of what your target DET score will take.

2

Your Custom DET Plan

Your target score. Your weakest subscores. Your application deadline. We build the plan around exactly where your marks are going — not a generic task list.

3

Train, Mock, Achieve

Task-type drills, mock tests with subscore tracking, Video Interview practice, and Writing Sample coaching — until your DET score is consistently where your university needs it to be.

FAQ

Duolingo English Test questions we hear every day.

What DET score do I need?

Most universities require a score between 100 and 115. Competitive and highly-ranked programmes typically ask for 115 to 130, and elite research universities may require 125 or above. Community colleges and foundation programmes often accept scores as low as 85. We confirm your institution's exact requirement before building your plan.

How is the DET different from IELTS or PTE?

Three main differences: it is taken entirely at home (no test centre), it costs around $65 (significantly cheaper than IELTS at ~₹16,000 or PTE at ~₹15,900), and results arrive in 48 hours. The test format is also unique — adaptive questions, shorter overall duration (~60 minutes), and task types unlike anything in IELTS or PTE. It suits students who prefer flexible test-taking over fixed exam centre slots.

How long will DET preparation take?

Most students reach their target score in 2 to 4 weeks of focused 1:1 training. Because the DET's task types are unlike other tests, format familiarity accounts for a large portion of the score improvement. Students with strong English can often reach their target in just 2 weeks once they know every task type well. A Capsule Course is available for urgent application deadlines.

Are classes online or in-person?

Both. Our 1:1 sessions run fully online, in-person, or as a mix — whatever works for you. We train students across India. Since the DET itself is an at-home test, online preparation sessions are particularly natural for this exam.

What if I don't reach my target score?

We don't walk away. We review the result, identify the specific subscore gap, and continue working with you. Your goal doesn't change until you achieve it.

Is the first class really free?

Yes. No catch. The free demo class is how we understand your goals, assess your current DET level across all four subscores, and show you exactly how your plan will work. You decide whether to continue — no pressure either way.

Your target score. Let's go get it. Together.
